A Temezcal Experience
While in Mexico I had the opportunity to partake in a temezcal ceremony. It was described to me as re-entering the womb of mother earth to cleanse and heal to reemerge back into the world as a new being. It is a beautiful experience that I would highly recommend.
Some notes:
derived from the Nahuatl word temāzcalli meaning ‘house of heat’
practice that originated in Mexico
/this very simple but meaningful ceremony is impactful to your physical, mental, and spiritual self.
structure:
a hole is dug into the earth and a dome structure made from volcanic rock, cement, mud or wood covers it. seating is in a circle or semi circle shape. There is a space in the middle where hot stones are brough in during the ceremony.
ceremony:
before: we were given an herbal tea to help ground us. there was music and singing as a method to release that which you no longer want. honoring mother nature and obtaining the blessing of 4 directions before entering the womb. cleansing your energy from the smoke copal.
during: the opening is purposely small, you’re crawling into mother earth. drumming and singing creates a vibration in the space, releasin all that you wish in order to heal. water is poured over hot volcanic stones and herbs to create steam. chanting to engage and realgin your chakras
after: run cool water over your head. adjust your wardrobe. eating a delicous vegetable based meal.
you may feel quite a bit sensitive after the ceremony. you may want to remain quiet, to yourself, reflective etc. try not to have plans afterwards, settle on the couch with a cozy blanket.
tips:
be comfortable - wear clothes you’re ok to be wet in like bathing suit
be mindful of your guide - she’s important for your experience!
try to have a ceremony with a small group - your energy is super out there and its less to mingle with
be present - you get out of it what you give.
